The College of Arts and Law Academic Writing Advisory Service

Academic Writing Advisory Service
Academic Writing Advisory Service (AWAS) is a dedicated service for all CAL students.

Undergraduate students

AWAS provides advice on essay writing. There is a combination of support in the form of:

  • lectures and small-group workshops co-taught with academic staff or led by members of the AWAS Tutor team
  • individual tutorials conducted face to face, or via platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams
  • and feedback comments on your work via Email.

Further details can be found on thededicated AWAS for Undergraduate Students Canvas site.

AWAS also has its own online self-access materials for independent study where you can hear our students talk about the transition from school to university, and how they have developed as academic writers throughout their undergraduate careers up to, and including, writing up their final dissertation. You will also find clips of academic staff talking about the specific requirements of different types of essays. There are activities and exercises designed to help you at every stage of the process, from reading the question to the final edit, with particular reference to the marking criteria used to assess your work.

Postgraduate students

Academic writing support is also available for postgraduate students, whether on taught (PGT) or doctoral research courses (PGR). Support includes:

  • workshops co-taught with your module-tutors
  • individual tutorials
  •  online self-access materials
  •  and feedback via Email.

For more information, consult the AWAS for Postgraduate student sites:  AWAS for Postgraduate Taught Students  and AWAS for Postgraduate by Research students .

There are also opportunities to work with AWAS as part of our Academic Writing Tutor team. Details are advertised on the AWAS for PGR Canvas site above.
