The 'Assess your Academic English!' was developed to help students and departments diagnose the strengths and weaknesses of international students' (whose first langauge is not English) academic English.
Frequently Asked Questions
How/where do I access the assessment?
Where: You can do the ‘Assess your Academic English!’ online assessment on any computer/laptop that has an internet connection and speakers/headphones (there is a listening test). We do not recommend doing the test on your mobile phone.
How: the assessment is accessed online on a Canvas course. From 3 October 2017, students can self-enrol on the following Canvas course: BIA Insessional English Programme.
Do the results of my assessment appear on my programme assessment grades or my academic transcript?
No. However, your department may ask to see your results and may refer you to further compulsory Academic English classes if your scores show that you have not mastered all of the Academic English skills needed in your programme.
How many times can I attempt the assessment?
Each of the quizzes can be attempted only once.
How will I receive feedback?
From Thursday 5 October 2017, your results will be viewable through the ‘grades tool’. Until this date, the quiz results are muted.
What is the Birmingham International Academy?
The BIA is part of the University of Birmingham. It provides English language services to international students who are currently studying on postgraduate or undergraduate courses at the University of Birmingham. English is my first language. Do I have to do this assessment?
Your department asked us to enrol you on this assessment because they believe your first language was not English. Please speak to your department if they have made this assumption in error (we apologise for any misunderstanding).
How do I receive technical support?
My internet Browser is telling me that it ‘does not meet minimum requirements’.
We are currently experiencing some problems with Internet Explorer with Canvas applications at the University. Try using another modern Browser such as Googlechrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari.
I cannot remember my University username or password/I have a problem with my password.
You will need to call (0121 414 7171) or visit the University’s IT Helpdesk (Main Library) to reset your password.
I ran out of time. Canvas tells me I cannot attempt the quiz again.
You only have one attempt at each quiz.
I have no computer or laptop at home.
There are many computer clusters available to students across the campus. If you have no headphones, please contact Saroj Watton (firstname.lastname@example.org) who can lend you some for 24 hours.
