Synthesise for Success: summarise don't plagiarise

This is a course for international, Masters students (PGR and PGT) studying at the University of Birmingham whose first language is not English. Students who enrol for all four workshops and attend all four sessions will receive a certificate of completion.

This 8-hour course consists of four 2-hour workshops which help to improve your use of written sources. It is intended to lead you to a better understanding of the academic skills involved in working with literature, and to help you improve your ability to paraphrase and  synthesise from multiple texts. Development of your academic English writing techniques  will consequently reduce your risk of unintentional plagiarism. The workshops include a mixture of information and practical exercises and tips. Each workshop will focus on improving your use of sources through study habits, enhanced reading skills and enhanced writing skills. In addition you will use real source material from your department.

This is a non-credit bearing course. You are required to attend all four workshops  and assessment will be via submission of a 500 word summary. If you achieve a 40% pass, you will receive a PASS grade on your final university transcript.

Before enrolling on the course, please ensure that you are able to attend the dates for all four workshops for a particular course. Once enrolled, attendance for the four sessions is compulsory. It will not be possible to change courses.

You will receive a Canvas announcement nearer the time of each course to enable you to register in good time and book your place.

Please note that postgraduate Biosciences and Social Policy students will have the opportunity to attend this course within their own departments and students should ask their respective departments for the dates/times of each workshop.
