About to start work

Are you about to join us for staff induction in readiness for your first day of teaching? Whether you are arriving on campus or joining us online, we hope you find the information on this page helpful.

Teacher Induction

Our 4-day teacher induction will start on the Tuesday before the start of your course (Student welcome).

During the 4 days of induction you will meet the BIA coordinators, welfare tutor, admin team and programme managers who will support you and your students during the presessional course.

Your induction period will give you the opportunity to ask questions, share ideas with colleagues and prepare for your first week of teaching.

A timetable will be sent to you by email but to get a taste of what to expect, sessions will include:

Course content and Scheme of Work

Class teachers and Language Support Tutors (LSTs) will get an overview of the curriculum and understand how the materials are used in the course to achieve the learning objectives.

Canvas and Zoom training

These sessions cover use and take a look at other online platforms that will be essential during the presessional.

Online Safety and wellbeing

Our welfare tutor will go over online safety considerations for students and staff and share what support is available to students and staff during the presessional course.

Collaborative Teaching

Whether your role is that of a Class Teacher or a Language Support Tutor (LST) there are multiple opportunities for collaborative teaching at the BIA. This session focuses on best practice when it comes to teaching collaboratively.

Getting the most out of CPD

We consider professional development at the core of our practice and we offer a wide-ranging CPD programme during the summer. The CPD coordinators will share our approach to CPD and what you can expect while teaching in the presessional course.

We hope that the induction sessions will give you a good understanding of the BIA's ethos and values and an insight into the essential aspects of the Presessional English programme.

We look forward to seeing you there!

HR and Payroll

Teachers on the 20 and 15-week programmes will have an annual leave allowance.  Outstanding leave will be requested for payment at the course end.

Teachers on the 10, 6 and 4 week programme are on casual assignments and will need to submit weekly timesheets through Core.  Should you have approval to take a day off, you will not submit any hours on the timesheet for that day.

Please take note of which weeks’ timesheets will fall into each end of month pay, and the deadlines to submit timesheets.

Find more information on completing timesheets

Casual Holiday Pay

Due to changes in legislation, holiday pay for teachers on a casual assignment will be found in Core. Whenn a weekly timesheet is submitted you should at that time book the casual accrued leave out for payment. If you do not book your leave for payment it will be paid to you after your assignment has ended by HR which can be up to 21 weeks from your start date. This will delay the payment of holiday pay and the issuing of a P45.
