Pitch your idea for a chance to win big cash prizes at the Birmingham Start-up Games 2019!

The Birmingham Startup Games has been organised by the UoB Start-up society and is exclusively open to all University of Birmingham students.

Do you have a business or a great business idea? Present a 5 minute pitch to a panel of judges for a chance to win money to help your idea take off. The winners will have the chance to pitch their idea at the Birmingham Connections event which is attended by an external audience of local businesses and start-ups.

Prizes

There is a total prize pot of £4,000 available split into two different categories. If you have a business already, you can enter the Registered Business category. If you do not have a business but have a great business idea you can enter the Business Idea category.

Innovation Prize Fund - £400: This one off bonus prize is awarded to the most innovative idea and open to entries from both categories.

How to apply and Key Dates

The competition is now open and you can enter via the link below!

Round 1 - Apply before the deadline on Wednesay 20 February 2019: To enter the competition, please fill out an application form via the below link. The application form is used to categorise the applications, assess the quality of the applications and choose the top 6 finalists for each category (12 in total). Participants can also attach a 2 minute video or a presentation deck via the application form. Application forms submitted in Round 1 will be judged by the UoB Start-Up society and B-Enterprising.

Shortlist announced on Friday 1 March 2019 - If successful, you will be invited to enter Round 2. Your ticket to the Birmingham Startup Games 2019 and the chance to win prize money!

Round 2 - Birmingham Startup Games on Wednesday 20 March 2019: Round 2 of the Birmingham Startup Games is a live, full day pitching event. Each finalist will be invited to deliver a 5 minute pitch that gives an in depth overview of your business/business idea. The pitch will be followed by a 5 minute slot for Q&A from the judging panel. Some things to keep in mind to help your pitch:

  1. Make your pitch concise and give a clear picture of your business or business idea
  2. Present how your business idea solves a problem or adds value
  3. Provide evidence that your business/business idea is feasible, sustainable and realistic
  4. Provide the details of your market research, commercialisation strategy and outline how you will bring the idea to market

Results: The Birmingham Startup Games will be followed by the Birmingham Connections event during which the results will be announced.

The winners in both categories, as well as the winner of the Innovation Prize will have the opportunity to pitch their business or business idea during the Birmingham Connections event. 

Birmingham Connections is an annual event hosted by Careers Network attended by local businesses, local start-ups and University of Birmingham staff and students. 

Important Information

In order to participate in the Birmingham Startup Games 2019, you need to be a registered member of the University of Birmingham Start-up Society. If you are not a member, you can purchase a membership for only £5 per academic year.

The competition provides students with the exceptional opportunity to develop entrepreneurial ideas. We hope the Startup Games will help you to develop your pitching skills for real-world scenarios. It is also a great opportunity to present your business or business ideas in front of other students and industry professionals and gather feedback from a wider audience. Most importantly, Start-up Games is a day full of entrepreneurial fun, an opportunity for you to meet like-minded entrepreneurs from the University of Birmingham and create lasting connections.
