Nikol Lambeva - Gateway Bursary success story

Nikol, a student in the School of Physics, used the Gateway Bursary towards working as a Research intern at Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf in Germany.

Read about her experience below.

What did you do?

Nikol spent 3 months during the summer of 2015 in Germany at an established research centre, partaking in a research project to develop the next generation of electrical transistors. Nikol’s main role was to perform the electrical characterisation of a new device called the Silicon Nanowire Field Effect Transistor.

This involved taking a range of different measurements using sophisticated technology, analysing the collected data and developing a theoretical model based on the findings.

What did you learn?

Through the internship Nikol developed a range of specific and transferrable skills, in addition to valuable first-hand experience in a professional environment. The experience also helped Nikol to ‘pin-point’ particular research areas which will support her in becoming a respectable researcher in the Physics community.

“This summer internship not only helped me lay the groundwork needed for my future career strives but also fulfilled many dreams I never imagined could become reality. This summer was a life changing experience in many ways. It especially helped me develop a well defined idea of what I would like to do in my future. Without [the support of the Gateway Bursary] I wouldn’t have been able to undertake this amazing project.”
