CV Checker video transcript

Title: Introduction to CV Checker

Duration: 2:37

Hey, I’m Gideon and I’m going to show you how to get the most out of the CV checker service. CV Checker provides 24/7 CV checks with immediate feedback, allowing you take the first step to creating a really good CV. CV Checker is designed to be used with standard CV types and formats. So if you are applying to a very specialist field, such as creative industries or research, then follow the link below for more guidance on this: www.intranet.birmingham.ac.uk/as/employability/careers/apply-yourself/cvs-and-covering-letters.aspx.

Once you have used CV Checker, and you're happy with it, be sure to tailor your CV to the role you are applying for. You can then send your tailored CV over to Careers Network for a final check before applying. So complete the registration process and log into your email to verify your account and you're in.

Remember that CV Checker is hosted by a system called VMock, so all communication you receive will be from VMock. As you enter CV Checker, you will see some CV guidance and a template which you can download – perhaps even before you upload your CV, take a look at this for some tips on how to lay out your CV and the things to cover. Remember there is also the Careers Network quick guide on CVs, for which there is also an informational video.

Before you upload your CV, remember:

  • You have a limit of 10 CV uploads
  • CV Checker will only accept CVs in a PDF format

When you’re happy, click the upload button and select your CV. CV Checker will assess your CV against a range of measures and then provide you with a score. Try not to focus on this score, but instead look at the detailed feedback CV Checker has provided.

Stronger points are showed in green and weaker points in red. CV Checker provides feedback on three different elements: The impact section will help you ensure that your CV is action-orientated and avoids overused or ineffective words. The presentation section will give you tips on how to improve the visual elements of your CV, like length, font, structure and grammar. The final section will give feedback on how effectively you have demonstrated in-demand competencies, like communication, team work, and leadership.

Once you have digested your feedback, make the appropriate changes to your CV and upload it again to see the improvement. If you don't understand some of the feedback you have received, particularly if English is not your first language, contact Careers Network using the email address found in the description.

I hope that has been a helpful overview of how CV Checker can support you and thanks for watching.
