Raising the profile of rare sales catalogues in the Barber Fine Arts Library
The National Gallery is collaborating with the Getty Research Institute to identify extant sales catalogues for the period 1680-1800 and add them to the Getty database of British art sales.
The Barber Fine Art Library is one of the collections being consulted and the project is confirming the existence of rare and even unique items in our collection. Researchers from the project will be photographing some of our catalogues to record any hand-written notes such as buyer or seller names and prices.
Our internationally-renowned collection was largely put together by E. K. Waterhouse, second director of the Barber.
