Request postal loans

Due to the closure of the Main Library during the Covid-19 health situation, postal loans are currently unavailable. We are unable to say at this time when the service will resume. The normal details of the service can be found below and we will update this page and allow online requests again as soon as services reopen.

We can send loanable books directly to University of Birmingham staff and students within the UK. Please allow at least ten days for delivery.

  • Postal loans are restricted to loanable books only. You can search the library catalogue at Books are issued for a week initially and will automatically renew each day until they are requested by another borrower. It is your responsibility to ensure that any items that you have borrowed have not been requested by another borrower. Renewals will stop after once an item has been requested. You will usually have a week to return items that have been requested by other borrowers. You will receive daily e-mail alerts when an item on loan to you is due back, but please do regularly check your library account at FindIt@Bham to check all loan dates. See information about borrowing and requesting. Scans or photocopies of articles or chapters are also available.
  • A fee of £7.50 is chargeable for up to four postal loans. You can either fill in the online form below or download the PDF version (119KB) and post it to us.Once we have processed your order, we will contact you with the final cost and instructions for payment. Secure payment can be made online using a credit or debit card, or you can send us a cheque. We cannot take payment using card details sent through the post.
  • Books are issued for seven days in the first instance. They will renew automatically each day, but renewals will stop once someone else reserves the book. You will receive emails to let you know if this happens. You will usually have a week to return items which have been reserved by other borrowers. 
  • It is your responsibility to return the books to the library: either in person or by using the post-return address labels that are provided. Please use a signed for, insured service.
