PGR mailbox migration and update to Outlook web app

As part of the planned University email server refresh, IT Services are in the process of migrating all staff and postgraduate researcher mailboxes onto new and upgraded servers. It will take approximately 3 months to update the entire University.

How will this impact me?

The process will be relatively seamless as your mailbox will be migrated in the background. However, once your mailbox (and any others that you have shared access to) has been migrated, you may be asked to restart your desktop Outlook client.

The one thing that you will notice is that the web version of your mailbox, formerly Outlook Web App (OWA), has been significantly modernised. The new version is called Outlook on the web and not only looks and feels very different but also includes many new features.

Why are we moving?

Moving to Microsoft Exchange 2016 has many security and performance benefits over the current version of our email servers and is more integrated with Microsoft Office 365. For a full list of the new web features and benefits please visit our Outlook on the web intranet page.

What else do I need to know?

During the wider migration you may experience a temporary loss of access to your shared mailboxes through Outlook on the web. Whilst IT Services have taken all possible steps to prevent this from happening there is a small chance that this still might occur.

Finally, during the migration, access to public folders via OWA will be unavailable, this is due to a technical limitation of the Microsoft products involved and is out of our control.
