Postgraduate researcher community

Being a postgraduate researcher at the University of Bimringham is about more than just completing your research and writing your thesis. You are part of a 2,500 strong community of people, and there are organisations around the University which represent you and help you meet other people in your position.

The postgraduate researcher newsletter

You will be automatically sent a monthly newsletter by the University Graduate School each month containing stories of postgraduate research, upcoming events, opportunities and training. The newsletter is sent to your University email account, so be sure to check this regularly to receive communications from the University.

The Postgraduate and Mature Students Association (PGMSA) represents postgraduate and mature students at the University of Birmingham. They are a voluntary group, recognised by the Guild of Students, who organise social activities for postgraduates, campaign on issues for their members (i.e. you!) and gather feedback from postgraduates about academic or welfare concerns.

The University Graduate School works with the PGMSA to ensure our activities align with the views of postgraduate researchers.

The Westmere PGR Hub

The Westmere PGR Hub is the centre for postgraduate researcher workshops, conferences, training sessions and social events for all postgraduate researchers at the University of Birmingham. The space is open to all postgraduate researchers and provides an excellent opportunity for you to meet other PGRs from different disciplines and engage in interdisciplinary conversations.

For more information about the events taking place in Westmere, please follow @uobwestmere or have a look at the website.

Student representation

The student representation community consists of almost 1,000 Student Reps who represent the views of undergraduates and postgraduates to the University. Student Reps work closely with staff to identify issues, concerns and opportunities for development and enhancement.

Student mentor schemes

The Student Mentor Scheme is a service run by the Guild of Students that is here to provide you with advice and guidance whilst living in University accommodation.

The Guild of Students

The Guild of Students is the union for all students at the University of Birmingham. As a postgraduate researcher, you may not consider that you need a students' union, but the Guild of Students includes student groups such as the PGMSA, opportunities for part-time work, advice and representation and much more besides.
