Reusing

We don’t believe in throwing things away just because they aren’t needed any more. That’s why we give old office furniture, equipment, and other resources a second lease of life through Warp It.

reusing

Warp It is a peer-to-peer redistribution network that makes it easy for University staff to give away or loan unwanted items to others on campus for free. As well as being great for the planet, exchanging used items is a fantastic way to free up much-needed storage and office space and save money.

How do I get involved?

To get started, simply visit our Warp It homepage and hit the ‘register now’ button. You’ll then receive instructions via email on how to set up your profile, etc.

You’ll find all the guidance you need to add an item and claim an item via the Warp It website. Warp It also offers free and quick online tutorials to help you use the system.

Through the system, you can create an item ‘wish list’, which Warp It uses to match you with people with the resources you’re after. What’s more, if you’re planning a clear-out, you can add items in advance, allowing people to collect your unwanted items when it suits you.

What items can I exchange?

Pretty much anything, so long as it’s in good condition and legal! The main items exchanged on the platform are:

  • reusable furniture
  • electrical equipment
  • fixtures and fittings
  • office consumables (e.g., stationery and ink cartridges)
  • lab and medical equipment

When you list an item, it’s your responsibility to ensure it’s described correctly and that you follow Warp It’s guidelines. All users must agree with Warp It’s terms on registration and before a trade takes places.

How do I collect items?

Once you’ve claimed an item via the platform, you’re responsible for arranging its collection. This will be easy for most items; however, should you need assistance or a vehicle to collect the item, please get in touch with the University’s Porting Team.

As the collector, it’s your responsibility to ensure the item is safe and appropriate to use.

What happens if unwanted resources aren’t claimed?

We are working on Phase 2 of Warp It which, if approved, will enable staff to take home any items that haven’t been claimed by the end of the main ‘sale’ period for personal use.

We are also exploring extending the system to allow external ‘trades’, which would open our Warp It platform to other universities, colleges, schools, local authorities, the NHS, and charities. This allows us to benefit not only our university but our local community too, helping to increase the good that comes out of every exchange.

Benefits of using Warp It

Using Warp It is a great way for us to monitor the amount of ‘waste’ we produce as a University, and offers helpful insights into waste monitoring, our CO2 footprint, and recycling. We use the data from the platform to create management reports and key performance indicators, to help plan future sustainability initiatives.

By using the platform, you’ll be helping us to:

  • reduce unnecessary purchases
  • reduce waste
  • save on purchasing and waste disposal costs
  • help with building clearances
  • reduce supply chain waste and carbon emissions
  • improve collaboration between staff
  • remove the need for immediate storage.

If you have any questions about using Warp It, you may find the answer you’re looking for on the platform’s FAQs page. If not, please get in touch with us at recycling@contacts.bham.ac.uk, or by ringing us on ext. 45943.
