The University of Birmingham has once again made it into the list of Stonewall Top 100 Employers in the Workplace Equality Index 2017, a national benchmarking tool that shows which UK workplaces are most inclusive for LGBTQ staff.
This year, the Rainbow Network have also been recognised as a Highly Commended Network Group.
The Workplace Equality Index is in its thirteenth year, and the University is celebrating its third consecutive year in the Top 100 Employers. The evaluation is based on evidence of policies and training relating to LGBTQ staff, community engagement, LGBTQ networks, and a variety of other factors, as well as the results of an optional survey designed to assess how comfortable LGBTQ staff are to come out and be open about their identity at work.
Record numbers of organisations took part in the Workplace Equality Index this year, with over 430 submissions received and over 90 000 staff participating in the survey. Out of these, the University of Birmingham ranks 75th.

“The University is proud to be included in Stonewall’s Top 100 Index of the most gay-friendly employers in the country for the third year running. This clearly reflects our commitment to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of our University community. I am particularly pleased that the University’s Staff Rainbow Network has been Highly Commended by Stonewall in recognition of their work in promoting LGBTQ issues through events such as those taking place this February for LGBT History Month.”
