Research Development

Support available to develop a research funding proposal.

The Research Development and Support Team in the Research Strategy and Services Division provides support to research applications to UK and overseas funders e.g. European Commission. We have five teams embedded in each our our Academic Colleges for UK research applications and one specialised team providing support for non-UK applications:

In addition to Research Development and Support Team support is available for industry-related research from the Business Engagement Team, and strategic activities and initiatives from the Strategic Research Development Team.

The University’s online platform for developing and costing research bids is called Worktribe.  This system needs to be used for all research bids being made to any funding body or organisation. You can access Worktribe online at

 Internal research funding

The University holds a number of funding research streams which it is able to allocate internally. Details of the funding steams available, and how to apply, are available on our web page.

Developing research with industry

Working with Industry can provide opportunities to produce greater impact for research outputs and deliver real-world solutions to important challenges. The Business Engagement Team develop and grow relationships with many commercial businesses, small and large. By identifying challenges of mutual interest we introduce academia to companies in their area of research, broker the development of project proposals and assist the set-up of commercial contracts for project collaboration. We also help to identify suitable funding mechanisms and advise on business case and project planning.

 Research funding - project development

Open Research

Funders are increasingly asking researchers to make their outputs available in easily accessible, public repositories. At the same time, it is just as important as ever to make sure that ideas and research with commercial potential are protected. The University of Birmingham has a number of departments that can advise on this, as well as a central Open Research webpage.
