What we do

We manage a range of services for all departments across the University of Birmingham.

View our sustainability journey here.

Mixed Recycling Scheme

The Mixed Recycling Scheme has resulted in increased recycling rates and by 2017, 100% of the University are involved in the mixed recycling scheme.

The “Binless” office was successfully introduced in September 2009 and we are continuing to implement this scheme across campus.

Cardboard Recycling

All unwanted cardboard should be flattened and left next to your office bin. Cleaning staff will remove the cardboard daily where it will be taken to Biffa’s recycling facility.

Glass Recycling

Glass recycling can be found at Staff House (loading bay), Muirhead Tower (rear of building), Guild of Students (back of Guild), Undercroft (coffee lounge) at Biosciences and Student Accommodation sites including Jarratt Hall, Pritchatts Park and The Vale Village.

Skip Hire

If your College or Department have large amounts of waste to dispose of and require a skip you must submit this form.
*please attach a photo if possible to help us place the skip in the required location

Please note no hazardous, clinical or electrical items to be placed in any skips on campus, for correct disposal of these items see below. Mattresses can be disposed of for an additional cost, please contact Environmental Services for further information.

Our Contractors aim to recycle at least 98% of the items from your skip.

Plan on how to load all the rubbish on your skip

Throwing all the wastes or rubbish into the skip without having any plan will result in wasting plenty of space. To maximise the space of your skip, make sure to load it with a good plan.

  • Load all the flat items first (plywood, table tops, etc.) then load all the bulky and heavy items. Make sure to tightly pack your rubbish also to minimise the airspace that might take a lot of space.
  • After laying all the flat items into the skip, follow it by loading all the bulky and heavy items. This is to make sure that every space of the skip will be used. Make sure to load these bulky items in a manner that no space will be left unfilled.
  • Then crush all the remaining items to make it smaller chunks then load them to skip by filling all the remaining space on the skip. If you can crush some of the rubbish to smaller and materials, better since you will use every amount of space in the skip.

Don’t overload the skip

Every skip you will hire will have markers to indicate the fill levels. And an overfilled skip won’t be accepted by skip hire company as there are rules to be followed on transporting the skip bins, overfilled skip bins may subject to fines. So make sure to monitor the fill levels of the skip as you load it with your wastes to be disposed of.

WEEE - Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment

The University has a duty of care to dispose of electrical equipment in a safe and secure manner through the WEEE directive. These items cannot be placed with general waste. If you have any electrical items to dispose of please contact Environmental Services, we will arrange disposal where a small charge will be applied.

Please be advised that certain companies which you have purchased the replacement product from may be obliged to dispose of the old equipment.

IT Equipment

Unwanted IT equipment can be disposed of via Stone. Please complete the online form and contact them directly for a quote. Please complete the online form using our Hazardous Waste Producers Premises Code: AAK853 and contact them directly for a quote.

Ink & Toner Cartridge Recycling

Used toners should be recycled via Konica Minolta’s recycling partner EOS Solutions South. For more information visit the Toner Recycling FAQs.

General Waste

General waste will be collected daily from your office by Cleaning Services. We are a zero to landfill University as all general waste is sent to an Energy from Waste facility for incineration to produce heat and power resulting in lower emissions.

For any Recycling or Waste disposal enquiries and feedback, contact Environmental Services Team.

What happens to our Waste & Recycling?

Monday to Friday our staff will collect recycling from a number of different parts of the University. The recycling that we collect gets removed by Biffa, who arrive early in the morning to sort our recycling at their local waste management facility.
