'Invention or discovery' includes the production and development of computer software.
Members of staff shall consult the Managing Director of Alta Innovations Ltd as to the timing and procedure to be followed in connection with the publication of the results of research likely to form the subject of a patent application by the University, or to lead to exploitation in which the University has an interest.
If the University wishes to develop or exploit the invention or discovery, Alta Innovations Ltd will undertake this process and may ask the member of staff to carry out a number of duties. The member of staff will obtain a fair share of any profits, as will the department, if appropriate. If the University does not wish to participate in the development or exploitation of the invention, the benefit belongs to the member of staff.
If a member of staff is undertaking work sponsored by external bodies, this policy applies unless explicitly agreed by the University and included in the contract for the work.
