Time off for other public duties

As well as jury service, employees have the right to time off for carrying out certain public or state duties including:

  • serving as Justice of the Peace
  • reservists called up for service with the forces
  • local councillors
  • school governors
  • membership of certain other boards and authorities (a full list is in the guidance document)

Time off for these duties is unpaid.

Employees can complain to an employment tribunal if they are unreasonably refused time off for public duties or dismissed for asserting the right to time off for public duties.
