BSc History and Politics at the University of Bath 

What do you do in IT Services?

I am the Deputy Head of Service Management. I manage the ITIL process managers in IT Services. I am also Problem Manager and I cover major incidents when the major incident manager isn’t around. 

As a team, along with the Service Desk, we help IT manage the lifecycle of services from the design stage, transitioning them into live and Introducing the new services to the users with the help of comms. We help manage any changes that are made to the new and existing services and monitor how they are all configured to work together. We also manage any incidents that occur to the live Services, utilising the DR/continuity plans which we helped to create, and will facilitate until resolution. Incidents that reoccur will be managed as a problem and we will delve into why they may keep occurring.

In a nutshell, we help IT to be great. 

How did you get into technology?

I did a career change – after 10 years as a museum curator I decided I was fed up of not earning enough to live on. IT is much better paid than the arts so I became a service desk analyst many moons ago. Now I can afford to go on holiday and buy lots of shoes without getting into debt. 

What advice would you give to girls considering a technology related career?

You don’t have to be a techy to work in IT. If you have good organisational skills and the ability to communicate, IT needs you. 

What advice would you give to women thinking of working in IT Services at UoB?

Be confident and have the courage of your convictions.
