profile picture of Anya DavorenWhat did you study (at school, college or University)?

I completed my BA in Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies BA and my postgraduate degrees are in Healthcare Leadership PgCert and Health Informatics MSc.

What do you do in IT Services?

I work in the IT Project Office monitoring and managing projects of various sizes and complexity.

How did you get into technology?

I got into tech purely by chance.  During my 3rd year of my undergraduate, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, I found a graduate scheme with the NHS which had a specialism called Health Informatics and thought it sounded interesting, next thing you know I was moving to Brighton to work in a hospital that covered the entire of Sussex working in their Business Intelligence team and I specialised in SQL reporting.

What advice would you give to girls considering a technology related career?

My advice would be to not let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do – including yourself!  It’s very easy to doubt yourself when you’re starting out and the best lesson I learned was that messing things up is imperative to learning and progressing.

What advice would you give to women thinking of working in IT Services at UoB?

My advice would be to understand some of the different teams and roles out there.  A lot of people make assumptions about IT and what it does and doesn’t entail but there are so many different types of roles that require completely different strengths.  I genuinely believe there is a role for every kind of person in UoB IT Services.
