Student cluster software requests
IT Services are preparing student clusters for the next academic year, this is a FINAL call for software requests
IT Services are preparing the student cluster image for the 2019-20 academic year and request all teaching requirements are submitted via the IT Service Desk no later than 5 July, 2019. Software requests from last year will not be automatically carried over, this is to ensure the correct version is included for the next academic year. Could we also ask that sample files or test routines are supplied to help verify software is working correctly.
Please note that requests received after this date may not be available for the start of September 2019 term.
What do I need to do?
If you require software for teaching in a student cluster, please raise a Service Desk request by visiting http://itservicedesk.bham.ac.uk.
There will be a section called Student Clusters, please select Change software on IT Services cluster.
What do I need to include?
The request form has compulsory fields for the information we require. It is important each section is completed with as much detail as possible with onus in the following areas.
Location required for Software, please specify the student cluster rooms the software will be used in. We can liaise with local IT teams if the room is administered by a specific college.
Any further information will require the following:
- - The location of the installation files
- - Instructions if the setup is not default, e.g. if specific toolboxes are required
- - Licence information (code, server address, URL)
- - A test plan, instructions to help us simulate how the software will be used for teaching
- - Contact details of a member of staff that can test and verify the software is ready for teaching
What software is included as standard?
Operating System - Windows 10 Enterprise (64 bit)
Microsoft Office - Office 2016 (excluding Outlook)
Internet Browsers – Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer 11, Firefox and Chrome
Utilities and Tools – 7-Zip, Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Adobe Shockwave, McAfee VirusScan, Microsoft .NET Framework, Microsoft Silverlight, VLC Player
Standard Applications - Endnote, SPSS, Maple, MindManager, Minitab, NVivo, Exceed, Refworks, Sigmaplot
Assistive Software – Jaws, Text Read and Write, ZoomText
When will the student clusters be ready?
We’re aiming to adhere to the following schedule:
5th July – Final deadline for software requests
26th July – Software will be available for testing by the nominated staff member
12th August – Please report any software issues by this date following your testing
2nd September – Software rollout to student clusters
Can I request software later in the year?
For software required for the beginning of the 2019-20 academic year, we will require the information by the 5th July. We can add software throughout the year but will require notice of at least 4 working weeks. This is to allow time for packaging and testing.
