Software requirements for teaching 2020-21
We are now looking at teaching software requirements for student computer clusters for the new academic year. This year we are working in unusual circumstances and therefore we will have limited ability to process requests and to test and deploy software.
We intend to retain the software from the 2019-20 academic year and only update this if there is an essential reason to, for example, if teaching or learning would be adversely affected without the change.
The list of current software is available HERE and will be retained for 2020-21 academic year. If your required software is not on this list or needs an essential update you will need to submit a request via the IT Service Portal.
Please bear in mind that we will have limited resources to complete this year’s process.
You must submit any requests via the IT Service Portal no later than 30th June 2020.
What do I need to do?
If you require new/updated software for teaching in a student cluster, please raise a Service Desk Request by visiting the IT Service Portal http://itservicedesk.bham.ac.uk.
You will need to log in to the IT Service Portal, select Make a Request; click on Learn, Study Teach and then select Install Software on IT Services Clusters.
What do I need to include?
The request form has compulsory fields for the information we require. It is important that each section is completed with as much detail as possible with onus in the following areas:
Location required for Software - please specify the student cluster rooms the software will be used in. We can liaise with local IT teams if the room is administered by a specific college.
Any further information will require the following:
- The location of the installation files
- Instructions if the setup is not default, e.g. if specific toolboxes are required
- Licence information (code, server address, URL)
- A test plan, instructions to help us simulate how the software will be used for teaching
- Contact details of a member of staff that can test and verify the software is ready for teaching

Operating System - Windows 10 Enterprise (64 bit)
Microsoft Office - Office/Office 365 (excluding Outlook)
Internet Browsers - Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome
Utilities and Tools - 7-Zip, Adobe Reader, Adobe Shockwave, McAfee VirusScan, Microsoft .NET Framework, Microsoft Silverlight, VLC Player
Standard Applications - Endnote, SPSS, Maple, MindManager, Minitab, NVivo, Exceed, Refworks, Sigmaplot
Assistive Software - Jaws, Text Read and Write, ZoomText
When will the student clusters be ready?
We’re aiming to adhere to the following schedule:
Software request deadline, 30th June 2020.
We will work through the requests we have and update once they appear to be licenced working without error. We don’t currently know when testing on campus will be possible. As soon as we know we will update your IT Service Desk call.
We aim to have all software deployed by the start of the September term.
Can I request software later in the year?
For software required for the beginning of the 2020-21 academic year, we will require the information by the 30th June. We can add software throughout the year but will require notice of at least 4 working weeks. This is to allow time for packaging and testing.
