The collection and analysis of health data and patient records (‘digital healthcare’) is now an area of huge academic, clinical and commercial interest.

The Birmingham campus has excellent expertise in this area, including leadership of one of the Health Data Research UK (HDR-UK) hubs, and we are keen to further develop our competitive profile.

In order to bring together interested parties and to stimulate and encourage further activity, we have decided to form a virtual Centre for Digital Health with the plan to meet regularly to nurture our local expertise.

The aim will be to hear about local activity, network with colleagues across the campus and improve our competitive position.

We plan to invite speakers from outside the region and seek ways to increase the impact of our activity. Areas of focus will include education, fundamental research programmes, and optimization and innovation in health service delivery. This is for everyone interested in health data research – from clinical services to those undertaking large-scale analytics or algorithms and beyond!

The first meeting will take place on Tuesday 16 July, 3.00-4.30pm in the Forum Lecture Theatre, Centre for Professional Development (CPD), Medical School. Refreshments will be available in room CPD5.

  • The agenda will include our plans for development of the Centre for Digital Health and a research presentation by Dr Krishnarajah Nirantharakumar from the Institute of Applied Health Research on 'Automated Clinical Epidemiology Studies: an opportunity for clinicians and data scientists to do research at scale'

Please do come along and contribute to the development of this exciting new opportunity. Even if you are not able to attend this first meeting, please feel free to email us to advise of any subjects you wish us to cover in future meetings.
