FLC ENTERPRISE GUEST LECTURE: DAN ADLER - INDEPENDENT PRIVATE EQUITY PROFESSIONAL

As part of the Future Leaders Certificate, Careers in Business have arranged four inspirational, entrepreneurial guest lectures during October. Each speaker will talk you through their career journey and provide you with their insight into how technology has changed their sector, what it means for future roles, skills and opportunities, and what they believe are the most effective mindsets, skills and knowledge to adapt to the Future of Work.

This week you will hear from Dan Adler, an independent private equity professional.

Dan is an alumnus of Birmingham Business School. Following a successful twenty year career investing in UK mid-market service sector businesses, he is currently a non-executive director of three private equity backed growth companies - AgriBriefing, Isotrak and Coryton Advanced Fuels, and is working with a number of PE organisations on formulating their future growth plans.

He was a Partner at Lyceum Capital, an independent private equity investor which specialises in buying and building UK-based companies, working alongside management teams to acquire businesses which operate in attractive and fragmented sectors, and transform them into market leaders. The investment model created value by driving operational improvements, supporting organic growth, and sourcing and funding complementary acquisitions.

THE FINANCIAL MARKET CAREERS LANDSCAPE w/ PAUL MCCORMICK

Thursday 18 October, 6:00pm – 8:00pm, Muirhead Tower, G15

Paul McCormick is a Financial Careers Coach and founder of Opening City Doors (http://openingcitydoors.co.uk/) assisting students secure graduate programmes in global financial markets and related sectors. Paul has worked for several leading global financial institutions principally in bond trading and sales capacities and also as a Graduate Recruiter for a major financial services company. 

Paul will be cover a number of different topics:

City Careers Presentation covering the full range of obvious and non-obvious financial career opportunities open to Birmingham Business School graduates including Investment Banking, Investment Management, Wealth Management, Rating Agencies, Vendors and more. He will also talk about the Graduate Programme application process and timings for each sector. 

Paul will also cover alternative routes into financial jobs outside of applying to graduate programme with examples of Birmingham University students who have achieved this.

City CV, Covering Letter and Application Form Skills will also be covered including how to write the highest quality financial CVs and Covering Letters. What do Recruiters want to see? What are the most common errors made? What does a great CV look like? Paul will also cover online application questions and how to stand out from the crowd and differentiate your application. Finally, the importance of commercial awareness, and how to achieve this, will be discussed.

VMock uses the power of data science, machine learning, and natural language processing to give you personalised feedback on your CV.  You can use VMock 24/7 and have up to 10 uploads to help improve your CV.

We will demonstrate how to use VMock in order to improve your CV.  Once you have improved your CV with Vmock, you can meet with one of our careers advisers to tailor your CV to specific jobs/sectors. 

You are encouraged to bring a laptop and electronic version of your most recent CV as there will be time in the session to upload your CV into VMock.

MAKING THE MOST OF LINKEDIN

This workshop is for you if you are already on LinkedIn but you aren’t sure how effective your profile is and you want to take it up a level.  This will be an interactive session where one of our LinkedIn experts will share best practices for LinkedIn profiles, how to ensure recruiters will see your profile, how to effectively connect with business peers and alumni on LinkedIn, and other practical tips.  This is a must attend event if you are already using LinkedIn and wants to make their profile and usage of LinkedIn more effective.

CAREERS IN MANAGEMENT CONSULTANCY

Don Leslie is former founder-director of Beament Leslie Thomas Recruitment Consultancy and leader of BLT’s management consultancy recruitment practice.

Don will be speaking about the ‘hot’ sectors in the consulting market and the prospects for MBAs and Masters students who want to join a consulting firm. For those new to the sector, he’ll give pointers on the level you’ll join at, and the likely salary. He’ll also be encouraging you to look beyond the big names in the sector: he will outline how a spell with a boutique firm can benefit your long-term career, discuss examples of such firms, and show you some techniques to help you find them. Finally, he’ll be asking “Do you really want to be a consultant?”

Interested in finding out more about assessment centres?

Want more practice in group exercises and interviews?

In this full day interactive workshop, you’ll take part in a range of exercises designed to reflect those used in assessment centres by multi-national companies. As well as developing your skills and receiving feedback, you’ll have the chance to meet graduate employers, trained assessors and careers consultants. A great opportunity to ask everything you’ve always wanted to know about assessment centres!
