The University of Birmingham has been awarded Fairtrade status in recognition of its commitment to promoting ethical and sustainable practices.

The University and Food Fellows are dedicated to ethical procurement and sell a range of Fairtrade products in our outlets, including chocolate, bananas and hot drinks.

The Fairtrade University and College Award, jointly delivered by the Fairtrade Foundation and Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK), is awarded to institutions that have successfully embedded Fairtrade principles into their curriculum, procurement processes, research initiatives, and campus-wide campaigns.

Now in its eighth year, the award was bestowed on 22 UK universities this year in recognition of their commitment to promoting ethical consumerism and pushing for fairer wages for farmers and workers.

The award requires students to engage in social outreach and to work collaboratively with one another, and with their institution, to achieve the accolade.

This achievement underscores the University’s proactive approach to fostering a more sustainable future and educating and inspiring communities to make ethical choices.

The University’s journey to Fairtrade status involved collaborative efforts from The Guild, students, faculty, and staff, all working together to promote sustainability and social responsibility.

This milestone reflects the collective commitment to create a positive impact locally and globally. We continue to champion ethical practices and strive for a fairer, more sustainable world.
