National restrictions - November 2020

We understand that staff and students may be concerned about the impact of the latest announcement of new national restrictions for England by the Prime Minister on 31 October which come into force on 5 November and remain in place until 2 December.

For universities, the implications of this lockdown are very different to last spring; universities are one of the settings that the government has specifically decided will remain open, along with, for example, construction and manufacturing. Government’s clear expectation, in accordance with current regulations, is that students will remain on campus and in residence, supported with a blend of face-to-face and online teaching; that research continues; and that the library and campus buildings remain open and that universities maximise study space and opportunities for students. We also recognise the importance of the government’s general message that, where it is possible, people work from home to support the public health, and we are therefore working on the detail to get the balance right.

We have prepared a series of FAQs to help answer any questions you might have about what this means for your work, study or arrival on campus.
