Dr Samantha Pugh, Lecturer in STEM Education and Teaching Enhancement, University of Leeds

In recent years, collaboration and the concept of partnership working has become increasingly important in student education. At the University of Leeds, Samantha has developed a number of successful initiatives that have had collaboration at their heart:

  • Summer internships scheme comprising of students working on educational research and teaching enhancement in the STEM disciplines through the PRiSM research group (www.maps.leeds.ac.uk/prism). Successful summer internships have led to the development of final year projects through my research group.
  • Modules in partnership with industrial and commercial organisations. These include the Physics Group Industrial Project, Chemistry: Idea to Market and Chemistry: Making an Impact modules, and the RSC Chemistry Careers in SMEs and Waste to Wealth: Nuclear Decommissioning case studies. All of these initiatives would lend themselves to customisation in other disciplines.

At the event, Samantha will be discussing the rationale and mechanisms for introducing such initiatives, and the benefits that can be (and have been) realised through such activities.
