All student email - Monday 23 March, 2020

Dear student,

We are continuing to provide you with a daily update this week with information about the University’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.
We are very aware that the current situation will be a cause of some anxiety and we are meeting (virtually) every day to update our plans and to provide you with further detail about the forthcoming assessment period.   We do understand that this will be frustrating but we would ask that you are patient with us over the next few days as we are putting some more detailed advice together.   Our staff teams are working very hard to support the best interests of students, we are all working from home too and trying to adapt to this new situation.

Today’s Update:   Support from our students.

Your Guild of Students has launched the UoB Virtual Neighbourhood on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/uobvirtualneighbourhood
It’s a virtual place for you to connect with other students, for advice and information, podcasts, mindfulness – available wherever you are with thanks to The Guild Team.

More of our fantastic students are offering support to anyone that is still in Selly Oak through a community support group.
“We are a band of University of Birmingham Students who have set up a food bank to support both students and locals in Selly Oak who will be self-isolating. We also pick up and deliver prescriptions and contact elderly and vulnerable citizens in the area to make self-isolation feel less lonely”.

So what if you are self-isolating in halls or in the community?
Fill in this form and we will try our best and support you: https://forms.gle/3yys4LYMPi3BSxS36

Want to help?
Great you can in a few ways: have a car? Food to Donate? Can call someone who is feeling lonely?
Please fill in this form and let us know what you can do: https://forms.gle/5c9JoG8v3NFvAfVM8

Check out our page on facebook, there is a growing community of us, so you know you won’t be alone: https://www.facebook.com/groups/552874341990946/

Our students are volunteering!
Almost 1000 students from our College of Medical & Dental Sciences are already volunteering to help out the NHS in clinical and non-clinical roles.
We have been overwhelmed by the incredible response and we are so proud of everyone who is helping out at this difficult time.

Support for you:
We have updated our wellbeing webpages so that it is easier to find available support where you are.
We have also updated all of our COVID-19 FAQs so that it is easier to find the questions and answers that you are looking for.

We do understand that you will all still have a number of questions and we are working through these with more detail to be published tomorrow.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation.  Please do continue to look after yourselves and each other.

Best Wishes –
Student Communications Team
