All student email - Wednesday 25 March, 2020

Dear Student,

We are committed to keeping all of our students updated at this time. You may be receiving this email even though you are not based on our Birmingham campus, and some of the content may not be as relevant

All of us here, working from our homes, hope that you are well and starting to get used to the new way of life here in the UK.

We understand that many of you will be in your home countries - and we hope that you are all safe and well wherever you are in the world. Wherever you are, please do follow your local advice and instructions to stay safe…

In the UK, please follow the national advice to stay at home unless it is absolutely necessary:

  • Only go outside for food, health reasons or work (where this absolutely cannot be done from home)
  • Stay 2 metres (6ft) away from other people
  • Wash your hands as soon as you get home
  • Advice from:

This applies to ALL students and is particularly important for those in halls of residence. There have been incidences of group gatherings; this is against government guidance and puts yourself and staff at risk. We appreciate these are very difficult times, but it is vital the above advice is followed to keep students safe and allow staff who are keeping the campus safe to undertake essential work. All of us must protect each other by staying at home and avoiding contact with others.

We know that you want to stay connected and so we are continuing our daily updates all this week.

You can also stay connected to each other through the excellent new Guild of Students UoB Virtual Neighbourhood

Did you know - there is a wide range of University software available for you to download and use at home for FREE.

If you are unsure what work has been agreed and scheduled please check this with your Hiring Manager. You will need to submit your timecards and these will be checked and approved in line with the normal timecards process. The deadline to submit your timecards to be paid for work scheduled up until 9 April that cannot be undertaken due to COVID-19 is 09:00 on Tuesday 5 May. If you have any questions please get in touch with your Hiring Manager or Worklink. We have developed some Worklink-related FAQs for students: Worklink COVID-19 FAQs can be found here.

And finally for today –

On Tuesday, our daily update was an extended message from the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Education, Professor Kathy Armour, for undergraduate and postgraduate-taught students. Please read this message carefully for details about the summer examination and assessment period. While we have tried to provide as much information as possible at this time we do appreciate that many of you will have questions about “what does this mean for me?”.

Please be patient with us while we are working on more detailed advice at every programme level – further information will be coming out over the next weeks and details of when you can expect to hear from us are contained in the full message. Please do give your academic staff some time over this week and next to finalise this further advice and while we are all working under unusual circumstances. Thank you.

A copy of yesterday’s email regarding “exams and assessment” alongside the FAQs can be found here -

Keep well everyone and stay connected.
