All student email, Friday 27 March, 2020

Dear student,

We hope that you are all well at the end of what has been a very strange week for everyone.

This week we have all had to get used to life in the UK under new restrictions, and with many students around the world sharing the same experience in their home countries.  Our staff will have been settling into the new and unusual rhythm and routine of working from home at the same time that many of you will have been studying at home.  We are all working hard to adapt and transition to a new, and temporary, way of life.

Support that is available from Library Services

While our physical library sites are currently closed the library is still “ON”; our online library collections are still available.

  • Access to e-books, e-journals and other online resources are unaffected.
  • Many publishers are making additional content freely available on a temporary basis, in response to the current crisis.  (We will keep adding new resources as soon as we can when they become available).
  • For more information visit the Library website and FindIt@Bham.
  • Answers to many of your frequently asked questions about the library have been added to our webpages.

The Academic Skills Centre has a series of existing support materials and video content available including content from LinkedIn Learning.  Lots of helpful tips and advice to support your studies at a distance is available from the Academic Skills Gateway and LinkedIn Learning.

Remember -  that during this period we are being flexible regarding library loans:

  • Please hold onto books until we reopen. Nothing will be due back until the University re-opens.
  • Don’t worry about any fines- they will be waived.
  • We will cover the renewal of inter-library loan items from other institutions

For students in University of Birmingham Student Village Accommodation:

If you have library books that you cannot take with you,  please leave them in the designated collection point within your village.  The collection point will be near to your village reception and clearly signed. Books will collected by Library Services when the libraries reopen.

You will not be fined.   If you will be coming back to Birmingham and can take the books with you, please do.

Other Information

Today, is actually the last day of spring term, so as you “break-up” for Easter you should also be aware of the latest advice published by the Student Loans Company for students supported by the SLC -

SLC can confirm that students will receive their scheduled or next instalment of their Maintenance Loan at the planned start of their summer term, regardless of whether their university or provider has made alternative arrangements for teaching.

The SLC have published advice for students at their webpages and have asked us to remind all students returning for the next academic year that they should continue to apply for continuing student finance in the normal way.

It has been a busy week and one in which we have made a number of significant announcements.

If you have missed any of these we have created an archive of all the weeks messages available here.

We are going to continue to provide you with regular updates throughout the next month – although we will be relieving your in-boxes from daily updates for a while.  You can expect to hear from us next week and we would recommend that you keep checking your university e-mail account for further updates about the exams and assessment period and other UoB news.

Stay connected:

The Guild are supporting your connectivity and community spirit through the new UoB Virtual Neighborhood; with helpful tips to keep you busy, home cooking classes, chat and neighbourly advice to stay connected.

Stay safe and well:

If you are in the UK, please follow the national advice to stay at home unless it is absolutely necessary -

  • Only go outside for food, health reasons or work (where this absolutely cannot be done from home)
  • Stay 2 metres (6ft) away from other people
  • Wash your hands as soon as you get home
  • Advice from:

With best wishes from all of us -  from our homes to yours -

The Student Communications Team.
