Feeling lonely at University?

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week and this year’s focus is exploring loneliness. Our Student Wellbeing Services team have shared some things that can help you with building meaningful connections.

PG Corner

Are you a new Postgraduate Researcher at University of Birmingham? Join the University Graduate School's 'PGR Essentials: Getting Started' on Zoom, Tuesday 24 May 11am-12.30pm BST. These monthly induction workshops are a great opportunity to get to know the University Graduate School, and to ask questions and receive advice from a panel of current PGRs. Book your place here.

For all postgraduates, mental health consultancy Bloomwise are running in-person and online wellbeing workshops to support postgraduates in daily life and studies, and to give you the tools to support your friends and peers. Book online and in-person here.

Can you capture your research project in a single image? Images of Research, a competition open to all postgraduates, closes this Sunday 15 May 11:59pm! Hone your entry for the chance to win a £100 prize, and the chance to see your entry displayed at the Postgraduate Research Festival in June. More info here.

Assessment Support Weeks, Monday 9 – Thursday 19 May (online and in-person)

With assessment season round the corner, there are many workshops and sessions to help you prepare for each type of assessment. Whether it’s academic writing support or just drop-in revision sessions, there’s something for everyone. Find out more and book your place.

The Barber Lunchtime concerts series 2021/22 concludes with the renowned Ligeti Quartet, performing a series of works from contemporary composers. Find out more.

Grammy award winner Lekan Babalola and multi-instrumentalist Kate Luxmoore combine forces with a narrator, connecting evocative imagery of the deities of the Yoruba people with the beating industrial heart of Birmingham. Part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival. Book your tickets.

Outside the Box, 21-29 May, from 11.30am, Sports Centre Squash Courts

A cast of actors, professional players, and school children bring to life the fascinating history of the game of squash. From London gaols to the snow-capped mountains of Pakistan, this is a fantastic way to celebrate the University hosting the event during the Commonwealth Games. Find out more.

The Flatpack Film Festival is a fantastic way to see a host of independent films, celebrating the best of cinematography in some of Birmingham’s most exclusive and creative venues.

End to Industrial Action - The mandate for strike action by the Universities and Colleges Union (UCU) ended on 3 May, and so there are no further strikes taking place. Read more.

Changes to Your Account Sign-In - To increase cyber security at the University, we’re making some important changes to how you sign in to your student account. From Monday 1 August 2022, all student accounts will be protected by multi-factor authentication (MFA). Find out more.

Commuter Student Survey - Are you a commuter student? We want to hear what you have to say about your student experience! Please fill in this short survey (you must access it with your student account) before Wednesday 18 May, 5pm.

Research Experience Placements - The CENTA DTP is offering up to two paid summer Research Experience Placements in the environmental sciences to Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) Home undergraduate students from any science discipline who meet the general eligibility requirements. Apply now.

Interested in programming and computing? - The BEAR Challenge will be held 21-23 June, open to undergraduate and taught postgraduate students, with access to the Tier 2 national supercomputer, Baskerville, with state-of-the-art GPUs. Run a series of challenges giving you experience in using High-Performance Computing and hear talks on careers from a senior member of the worldwide Lenovo HPC Storage and Performance team.
