Christmas Events 2016

Get into the festive spirit with the wide range of Christmas events happening on campus and across the city. Sing along at the University’s annual carol service, head to Birmingham infamous Frankfurt Christmas Market or visit Santa at Winterbourne House and Gardens.

Frankfurt Christmas Market
Where: Victoria Square, city centre
When: 17 November to 29 December, 10.00am to 9.00pm (closed Christmas Day)
Birmingham’s internationally acclaimed German Market is back with its Glühwein, Bratwurst and handmade gifts in Victoria Square. There is also a Christmas Craft Market in Centenary Square, from 19 November to 20 December 2016, selling local goods from Midlands’ traders as well as ethnic products from around the world.

Christmas Craft Markets
Where: Midlands Arts Centre (MAC), Cannon Hill Park
When: 3, 4, 10 and 11 December 2016, 11.00am to 5.00pm
There will be plenty of unusual gifts to buy from Birmingham designer makers at these markets, including jewellery, clothes and cards.

Acorns Santa Run
Where: Cannon Hill Park
When: Saturday 3 December 2016, from 10.00am
Don your Santa suit and run or stroll around Cannon Hill Park to raise funds for local life limited or life threatened children and their family. The route will include one 5k race wave, one family 5k wave and one family 2k route (wheelchair and pushchair friendly). You will be joined by Carol singers, Santa and Christmas stalls.

Guild: Christmas on Campus
Where: Chancellors Court, Edgbaston campus
When: Monday 5 December, 12.00-9.00pm
Bringing some festive spirit to campus with a winter wonderland complete with ferris wheel, coursal, festive food and drink, craft stalls and a FREE Santa's Grotto!

Carol Concert in the Great Hall
Where: Great Hall, Aston Webb, Edgbaston campus
When:  Monday 5 December, 6.15pm
All welcome to join the Birmingham University Singers and conductor, Simon Halsey. A traditional service of carols and readings led by range University Chaplaincy.

Christmas Farmer’s Market
Where: University Square, Edgbaston campus
When: Wednesday 7 December, 10.00am – 3.00pm
Browse the range of stalls offering locally sourced, fairly priced and environmentally friendly produce from top quality organic goods to seasonal fare.

Jazz Collective Christmas Swing-Along
Where: Foyer - Bramall Music Building
When: Thursday 8 December, 12:30pm
Get into the festive spirit with a lunchtime performance from the Music Society’s jazz bands. Expect Christmas Classics jazzed up with a sprinkling of elf dust.

Christmas at Winterbourne
Where: Winterbourne House & Garden
When: Saturday 10 December, 11.00am – 4.00pm
Father Christmas and his reindeer will be welcoming children to the grotto before they set off on their busy schedule. Children who have been good will receive a present! There will be craft stalls to buy some locally made gifts, the tea room will be serving hot food and drinks all day, and carol singers will add to the festive mood.

Edwardian Tearooms Late: Muppets Christmas Carol
Where: Edwardian Tearoom,Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
When: Saturday 10 December, 7.00pm
The Muppet’s Christmas Carol will be screened in partnership with Colmore Film Club. Mulled wine and mince pies for sale, plus their usual menu.

Christmas Floating Market
Where: Brindleyplace canal near to the Barclaycard Arena
When: 10-18 December 2016, 10.00am-4.00pm
At least 12 trading narrowboats will assemble for a nine-day market on the water. A lot of the goods on sale will be bespoke items made by the traders themselves and will include knitwear, glassware, confectionary, stationary and handcrafted wooden gifts.

Brindleyplace Christmas Concert
Where: Water’s Edge Bandstand, Brindleyplace
When: Saturdays 10 and 17 December 2016
Santa and his elves will be joining the Sutton Coldfield Community Choir for two fun and festive charity concerts at 11am on 10 December and 2pm on 17 December. The event is completely free and any donations will go towards new projects funded by Heart Research UK at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Christmas by Candlelight
Where: The Old Joint Stock, Temple Row West
When: Sundays 11 and 18 December 2016, 5pm
Live Christmas music, a 25-foot Christmas tree, mince pies and hot toddies. There will be fundraising for Shooting Star CHASE.

Christmas Charity Ball
Where: Noble Room, Staff House, Edgbaston campus
When: 17 December, 7.00pm to 1.00am
A magical evening of dining and dancing to raise money for Birmingham Healthcare Community Charity and the Birmingham’s Women’s Hospital Charity. There will be a three course dinner, drinks reception, live entertainment and silent auction.

BBC WM Carol Service
Where: Birmingham Cathedral, Colmore Row
When: Tuesday 20 December 2016, 1.00pm
A free carol service with music from the Cathedral Choir and readings by BBC Radio WM presenters. The service will be recorded for broadcast nearer to Christmas.

Nativity: Three Masterpieces

Christmas Eve, Carols on the Green
Where: Bournville Green
When: Saturday 24 December, 6.00pm
A wonderful Bournville tradition stretching back over 60 years. Under the light of Bournville’s famous Christmas tree and to the magical accompaniment of the Carillon bells people celebrate the imminent arrival of Christmas by singing a selection of traditional carols. Visitors are encouraged to bring a lantern of some description to add to the atmosphere.
