Stay safe this winter

The darker nights are closing in and many of you will be planning nights out during the festive season or studying late so we’ve compiled a list of top tips on how to stay safe this winter.

We know you will have been given similar advice before but your wellbeing is important to us so we believe it’s worthwhile to give you a gentle reminder.

Don’t walk home alone

Tips on how to stay safe on an evening out or after a late study session. Don't-walk-home-alone

  • Go out in a group and come home in a group.
  • Stick to well-lit and well used areas. Do not take short cuts through dark and remote alleyways, parks or wasteland. Do not walk along the canal towpath at night. Walk briskly and with confidence. Walk along the pavement facing oncoming traffic but keep back from the curb. Keep clear of recesses such as doorways.
  • Be alert to your surroundings. Do not walk whilst chatting on your mobile phone or with earphones in.
  • If you have concerns about a group of people or a particular situation, keep away.
  • Carry your keys in your pocket.
  • If you think you are being followed check by crossing the street. If you are worried go to the nearest place where there are other people and call the police. Do not use a phone box.
  • Excess alcohol will blur your judgment and senses and make you more vulnerable. Keep your drink in sight and do not accept drinks from people you do not know well.
  • Carry a personal attack alarm. You can get these free from the police surgery at University Centre on Wednesdays (12.00-3.00pm) or Guild Advice. However, do not rely on an alarm to alert help. You still need to keep yourself safe.
  • Be wary of meeting anyone on your own if you do not know them well.
  • Do not visit a cashpoint alone.
  • Use a licensed taxi firm. Never get into an unmarked taxi.
  • Let your housemates know the approximate time you are due to arrive home.

Ensure your home and valuables are secure

  • Leave a light on when you leave the house so it appears as though someone is in.
  • Do not leave your personal belongings on display.
  • Never leave a spare key lying around even if you know a housemate is returning soon.
  • If you see anyone looking suspicious, report it to police or University security.
  • Use a UV pen to mark your valuables with your address.
  • Use tracking apps in case your things get lost or stolen so you can get them back.
  • Do not leave your property unattended, particularly mobile phones and laptops.
  • Try to carry your laptop in a shopping bag or a rucksack when travelling alone as a laptop bag will draw attention to it.
  • If you are away from your term time accommodation during the Christmas period take your personal items with you and check your home is secure before leaving.
