Health advice for students - Mumps

The University has been made aware that some students have been diagnosed with suspected mumps. The information below is precautionary only and is intended to advise you about the signs and symptoms of mumps.

The most common symptoms of mumps are fever and swelling of the parotid glands (at the side of the face under the ears). Both glands are usually affected by the swelling, although only one gland can be affected. The swelling can cause pain, tenderness and difficulty with swallowing.

Other symptoms of mumps include headaches, joint pain and a high temperature, which may develop a few days before the swelling of the parotid glands.

Please contact your GP or NHS 111 if you experience any symptoms.

Public Health England has advised that the risk of infection is low, particularly if you have received two doses of the MMR vaccination, which provides protection against mumps, measles and rubella.  If you have not received two doses of the MMR vaccination, you are advised to get immunised as soon as possible by contacting your GP.
