Diwali celebrations – 7 November 2018
In celebration of Diwali there will be three stands across campus, offering decorations, colouring activities and traditional food such as mithai (Indian sweets). The stands will be available at:
- Arts Building (R16) reception 12:00-16:00
- Engineering Lounge (Y3) 1:30-3:30
- Undercroft, Biosciences (R27) 12:00-16:00
To spread the celebratory atmosphere around campus, Diwali Ambassadors will be out and about on campus handing out mithai, for those willing to get a photo in celebration of the day.
Diwali, also known as Deepavali or Dipavali is a festival of great significance to Indian culture. The festival is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains each of which have their own reason to. There is however one common theme: the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
A five-day festival of lights, during Diwali houses, temples and public spaces are all decorated with lamps and candles also known as diyas. Fireworks are also lit, family feasts held, and sweets and gifts shared. The third day of the festival is most typically associated with the celebration – this year it falls on Wednesday 7 November.
