Getting active in the local area

Being active can greatly help reduce stress and boost your positivity, so it is particularly important to include physical activity in your study schedule. You do not need to spend hours in the gym to get active; there are many different types of activities you can choose from, so you are bound to find one that you will enjoy.

Walking

Walking is one of the easiest ways to get active - you could go to one of the local parks or make small changes to your routine, such as getting off the bus a few stops earlier. Read the NHS walking recommendations.

Sports Clubs

The University has a wide range of sports clubs from karate to Gaelic Football. View the list of sporting opportunities. You could also look for sports clubs in your local area.

Dance classes

From ballet to Bollywood, there are a wide range of dance classes throughout Birmingham. For a selection of available classes, take a look at the Library of Birmingham’s list of local dance groups.

Sporting facilities in parks and on-campus

A number of parks in the local area have sporting facilities, such as tennis courts or football pitches. Look for parks near you on the Birmingham City Council’s park directory.

You can also book the University’s sports pitches through UB Sport. Visit their courts and pitches webpage for more information.

Exercise at home

You do not always have to leave the house to complete your fitness routine. The NHS Fitness Studio has a selection of instructor-led videos for aerobics, strength and resistance, pilates and yoga.
