Student safety update – January 2019

After the vacation period we wanted to remind you about the ways in which we can all promote safety and security.  At this time of year with darker nights there can be an increase in property and cycle theft in the area and this year we want to end that trend.

Had a new Bike for Christmas?
The University operates a cycle registration scheme and funds FREE Gold standard D Locks – get one from our Lock It, Mark It drop-in events around campus this term. 

New laptop?  New Echo?
Make sure that your property is secure by keeping doors and windows locked. This week the University has written to all private sector landlords urging them to review the security on local rented properties.  We are also continuing to work with the West Midlands Police and have provided funds for five additional officers to work in and around campus and Selly Oak this year. 

Keep yourself safe
You can get a free personal attack alarm from us by visiting the Aston Webb Student Hub, reception desks within University accommodation, the Police and Partnership Hub in University Centre (opposite the Spar), and the Community Living Hub (next to Starbucks at Bournbrook).

We are pleased to support the ongoing initiative of the Selly Express Night Bus. The pilot of this initiative was scheduled for one term but the University has agreed, with the Guild of Students, to fund the pilot for a full academic year to allow for a full evaluation.

We are also working with the Guild of Students to fund the Community Wardens Scheme and support Street Watch in Selly Oak, alongside our continuing commitment to fund the repair and replacement of alley-way gates.
