Stay safe this summer

While the weather can’t decide if it’s summer or not we are quickly approaching the end of term and that long summer break. For many undergraduates with exams complete, dissertations submitted and no more lectures this period is often a time to celebrate and take some time out before working or travelling during the summer.

Your safety is important to us, so we wanted to offer some top tips for taking care of yourself during the next couple of weeks.

Looking after you and your friends

  • Where possible, go out in a group and come home in a group.
  • Stick to well-lit and well used areas and be alert to your surroundings.
  • If you are worried about a group of people or a particular situation, keep away and report it to police if you are concerned.
  • Keep your drink in sight and do not accept drinks from people you do not know well.
  • Use a licensed taxi firm. Never get into an unmarked taxi.
  • Let your housemates know the approximate time you are due to arrive home.
  • Keep in touch with each other so that someone knows where you are.
  • If you are having a party don’t leave the door open and make sure you know who is entering the property.

Looking after your property

  • When you leave your house ensure all windows and doors are locked.
  • Don’t leave windows open wide if you are not in the room, particularly on ground level. Do not leave your property unattended, particularly mobile phones and laptops.
  • Try to carry your laptop in a shopping bag or a rucksack when travelling alone as a laptop bag will draw attention to it.
  • Leave a light on when you leave the house so it appears as though someone is in.
  • Do not leave your personal belongings on display.
  • Never leave a spare key lying around, even if you know a housemate is returning soon.
  • If you see anyone looking suspicious, report it to the Police or University security.
  • Use tracking apps in case your things get lost or stolen, so you can get them back.
  • If you are away from your accommodation for an extended period of time take your personal items with you and check your home is secure before leaving.
