Event - Black in Academia: Staying the Course

#BlackinAcademia: Staying the Course events are designed to encourage and support Black students navigate entry to PhD research

 Black in academia

Hello future Black academics!

Welcome to our first event of 2020- Black in Academia: Staying the Course (Birmingham- Birmingham City University) sponsored by SAGE Publishing.

We are so excited to bring Black in Academia: Staying the Course to Birmingham City University! Since launching Black in Academia back in November 2018, we have been (rightly so), inundated with requests to bring this event series to key cities outside of London. Being supported by SAGE publishing has meant we’ve been able to make this a reality in Birmingham, Manchester and Leicester between January and April 2020.

#BlackinAcademia: Staying the Course events are designed to encourage and support Black students who are studying in the UK and considering a Masters, PhD or career in academia. Often, information about the steps students need to take to progress through academia is not transparent, easily accessible or well circulated.

The spaces we create are designed for current Black students (and returning Black students) to share their thoughts and concerns about postgraduate research whilst providing information about the practical steps they can take during their undergraduate and masters that will support their entry into *funded* postgraduate research.

Students from Black African and Caribbean background do not see themselves represented in higher education and a postgraduate career appears out of reach. Our ambition is to contribute to changing this through a series of events throughout the academic year that will equip Black students with the advice and knowledge they need to thrive and survive in an academia.

Join us for informative discussions, exciting academic speakers and an evening to discover opportunities in academic research.
