The University of Birmingham is kicking off the new academic year with a fantastic line-up of events designed to help Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs) settle in, make connections, and enjoy everything campus has to offer. From careers support to socials and city tours, we have something for everyone!
Start thinking about the future: Careers Support for PGRs

Details: Kickstart your postgraduate journey with this dedicated session from your Careers Network. Learn about the tailored support available for PGRs, from understanding your strengths, accessing careers in academia, to planning your next steps beyond the university.
Unwind: Guild Cheese and Wine Night

Details: For those looking to unwind and relax with your fellow PGRs, the Guild of Students is hosting a postgraduate Cheese and Wine Night. This is your opportunity to enjoy some free drinks and connect with other PGRs from across the University.
Explore Birmingham: Campus Tours and Canal Boats
When: Throughout Welcome Week (22-26 Sept), 11:00–17:00
Where: Campus tours meet outside Main Library; Canal boat toursdepart from The Vale, University Station and Selly Oak.
Details: Welcome Week is the perfect chance to explore Birmingham, both on campus and in the city. Join a campus tour with our friendly Welcome Assistants to discover key spots and hidden gems or hop on a canal boat for a relaxed ride along Birmingham’s famous waterways. This is a fun, easy way to get your bearings, meet new people, and start feeling at home—especially if you are joining us from overseas.
Celebrating Culture: The Benjamin Zephaniah Community Lecture

Details: This year we are excited to host award-winning spoken-word artist George the Poet as the key speaker at the University’s inaugural Benjamin Zephaniah Community Lecture. In this inspiring guest lecture, George the Poet will share powerful reflections on identity, activism, and community.
Support independent businesses: UoB’s Artisan Market
When: Tuesday 7 October, 10:00–16:00
Where: University Square
Details: Adding a splash of colour to campus, the Artisan Market will have stalls featuring food, crafts and local goods, UoB’s monthly market is a lively space to discover Birmingham’s creative side and enjoy a change of pace from research.
