Assistive technology booths

The Main Library has four assistive technology booths (ATBs). Students will be referred to us by the Student Disability Service for access.

How to book

You are welcome to book the rooms online, in person, via email, over the phone or via online chat.

Online

  • Go to library room bookings to see availability. Green slots are available to book, red slots have already been booked, and grey slots show when the ATBs are closed.
  • Select "Book a room".
  • Enter the number after BUP on your ID card.
  • A dropdown appears under "Select Room Type". Select "Assistive Technology Booths" from the dropdown.
  • A calendar appears under "Select Booking Date." Select the date you want to book.
  • Click "Continue". You are taken to a calendar where you click the time slot or slots you require. 

You can book a slot for up to three hours, four times a week. You can book up to two months ahead. To see what bookings you already have, and to cancel bookings, go to the "Book a Room" tab and click "View/Cancel Existing Booking".

Equipment and software

All of our booths have:

  • Blinds over the windows.
  • PC (Windows Desktop with 27" monitor) with matte screen
  • Accuratus high contrast keyboard
  • Natural light lamp
  • Headset
  • JAWS - screen reading software
  • ZoomText magnifying and screen reading software
  • Read & Write - reading and literacy support software
  • Dragon Naturally Speaking - speech recognition software
  • ClaroRead - speech recognition, screen reading and writing support software

Some hardware and software is only available in specific booths:

  • Braillers: ATB 1 on the ground floor has an Index Basic braille embosser, and a Viewplus Spotdot braille and ink printer. It also has Duxbury Pro braille translation software (full version) and Tiger software suite to support with the translation and production of braille texts.
  • Printers: all PCs are connected to the University's managed print service. ATB 1 on the ground floor also has a dedicated laserjet printer. 
  • Reading cameras: ATB 3 on the second floor has a Pearl camera with OpenBook software, while ATB 4 on the third floor has a T5 camera with Hovercam flex 11 software. Both are set up to allow the scanning and reading aloud of printed text.
