Choosing a suitable repository to deposit your data

  1. If you are funded, check your funder policy for recommended data repositories (e.g. NERC, ESRC). If you are commercially funded, make sure your data is archived in accordance with your contractual requirements.
  1. If your data is supplementing a journal article, you should check for the journal's data policy and data repositories specified therein.
  1. Consult the registry of research data repositories (re3data) for a suitable repository for your discipline. Criteria to consider when choosing a repository are:
    • Reputation: Is it certified? Have you come across favourable references to it? Are others using it to deposit data?
    • Scope: will it accept the data you want to deposit?
    • Legal issues: Does it comply with the Data Protection Act? Can you add embargoes or access restrictions if needed?
    • Sustainability: How long will your data be stored? Will a persistent identifier be assigned?
  1. If none of the repositories above is suitable to host your data, deposit your data in the UBIRA eData repository

Any research data which is retained in a service external to the UoB (incl. confidential research data sets) should be registered through the creation of a metadata record in the UoB's current research information system Pure.
