Supporting invigilator

The Exams Office at the University of Birmingham recruits Supporting Invigilators to assist in the invigilation of exams during the University’s centrally-managed examination periods on an annual basis. This is primarily for the University's January, Main Summer examination period (May-June).  Those that work in the Main Summer will also be invited to work during the University's Supplementary Examination period (August). 

January Exam period

Monday 8th to 13th January 2024

(Including Saturdays, but excluding Sundays and Bank Holidays)

Main Summer Exam period

Saturday 4th May to Saturday 1st June 2024

(Including Saturdays, but excluding Sundays and Bank Holidays)

Supplementary Exam period

Monday 12th August to Friday 23rd August 2024

Who can apply?

This role is open to part-time staff at the University, postgraduate research students and all external candidates. Postgraduate Research students will need to supply their Worklink. 

Undergraduate students and students on postgraduate taught programmes unfortunately cannot apply for this role.

Supporting Invigilator role

Main Duties

All Supporting Invigilators are responsible for facilitating the smooth running of examinations and are responsible to the Senior Invigilator.

Main duties include:

  • Working as part of a team to prepare the examination venue to ensure that all exainations start promptly. This will include laying out examination attendance slips, answer books, question papers, and any other necessary materials according to a seating plan.
  • Working as part of a team to invigilate the exam. This will include the checking and reconciliation of attendance slips, conducting random checks of student ID, accompanying students to the toilet, and handing out any additional examination materials that are needed. This may also include dealing with any examination incidents or irregularities that arise.
  • Working as part of a team to collate examination answer booklets and other materials at the end of the exam in a timely, accurate, and efficient way.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Previous experience of working in an educational setting
  • The ability to work as part of a team
  • The ability to work independently but also the judgment to seek advice when necessary
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure
  • The ability to deal with challenging situations in a sensitive, yet firm manner
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent reliability

Rate of pay

Rate of pay is £11.87  per hour (excluding holiday pay) for 2023/24

Invigilator training

It is mandatory for all supporting invigilators to attend a training sessions prior to the University’s January exam period. This will take place via an online link which will be sent to you if your application is successful.
