How do I know if I need to register with the police?

The condition to register with the police is given to people of certain nationalities, who come to the UK for more than six months.

If you are required to register, the condition will be printed on your decision letter which will be sent to you along with the return of your application documents.

If you need to register with the police your decision letter will contain the following statement:

"You and any of your dependants aged 16 or over must now register with the police. A fee will be charged and you must register within 7 days from the date of this letter or within 7 days of receipt of your Biometric Residence Permit. Your passport / passports / Biometric Residence Permit / Biometric Residence Permits, recent passport size photographs of each person and this letter must be provided for registration purposes. Registration must be with the local police. Please check with your registration office what other documentation you will be required to produce."

You can check the list of countries whose nationals need to register in Appendix 2 of the Immigration Rules.

The police are currently experiencing problems with their registration system, which means students cannot register or book an appointment. The police are aware of this, and you will not get into trouble or face any legal issues. For now the 7 day rule does not apply.
