Guidance for students wearing the face veil (Niqab)
The following advice relates specifically to the wearing of the Muslim veil - the niqab.
Obtaining your ID card and registration at the University
- ID cards are issued to students by the University each year at registration and are used as means of identification in a number of circumstances. The facial photographs taken for this purpose are required to show a full face so as to provide a suitable identification.
Students are provided with the following advice at registration:
- 'As a registered student you will be required to produce your University Identity Card to confirm your identity when asked to do so by a member of University staff. Failure to disclose identity (i.e. your name, University ID number, your address and School at the University) to a member of staff of the University where it is reasonable to require that such information be given shall be deemed a breach of Section 5.2.10 of the University Regulations and disciplinary action will be taken in line with Section 8.2.1 of the University Regulations'.
- If so requested by the student, the photograph can be taken in a private area by a female member of staff. This will involve the student removing the niqab temporarily for the purpose of the photograph being taken. This arrangement will be explained to the student at registration.
