I am taking leave of absence and my sponsorship isn't being withdrawn, what does it mean?

Student Visa implications

Please be aware of the following:

Due to the reasons for your leave of absence, the University is permitted to grant this period of absence as ‘authorised leave of absence’ for immigration purposes. This means that the University will not report the change of registration status to the Home Office and will not withdraw immigration sponsorship from your Student Visa.
If the duration of your leave of absence extends beyond 8 weeks, the University of Birmingham will no longer be able to sponsor you as a Student Visa holder and will report withdrawal of immigration sponsorship to the Home Office. The “Withdrawal of immigration sponsorship”article explains what this means to you.  Please ensure that you read this leaflet carefully.

Please note that if the reason for your absence is maternity leave, you are permitted to take up to 52 weeks leave of absence The University is only able to continue to sponsor you as a Student Visa holder (previously called Tier 4) and for a maximum of 8 weeks. If you have not requested a leave of absence for the full 12 months, please note that if you were to request an extension to your thesis submission deadline in the future, the University will not be able to grant the request on the grounds that you did not take your full maternity leave entitlement.
