Yuxuan Wu wins Editor’s Choice at national 3MT Final – a major win for Birmingham and a celebration of PGR excellence
We are excited to share that Yuxuan Wu, a PhD researcher at Birmingham Business School, has won the Editor’s Choice Award at the Vitae Three Minute Thesis (3MT) UK Final, following her victory in the University of Birmingham’s 3MT competition earlier this year.
Yuxuan’s presentation, titled ‘Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work – an example from medical imaging’, explored how AI is transforming NHS radiology—not by replacing professionals, but by empowering them to overcome workforce shortages and improve patient care. Her research challenges common fears about automation and instead highlights how AI can reconfigure professional roles in ways that benefit both practitioners and patients.
The Editor’s Choice Award signifies that Yuxuan’s research will be considered for publication on The Conversation platform, offering her a valuable opportunity to share her findings with broader national and international audiences. This recognition not only celebrates her ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and engagingly but also opens doors for real-world impact, something Yuxuan is deeply passionate about.
Her PhD project examines how and why AI applications are developed and used in UK healthcare, particularly in medical imaging. By interviewing key stakeholders, from developers to clinicians, Yuxuan is uncovering the motivations behind AI adoption and its implications for the NHS imaging workforce.
Yuxuan’s achievement is a testament to the power of effective research communication and a reflection of the innovative talent within Birmingham’s PGR community.
If you are a PGR at Birmingham, consider applying for the University of Birmingham 3MT competition in Spring to take your research to the next level. 3MT is your opportunity to refine your storytelling, build confidence, and connect your research with real-world audiences.
