Impact Internships

'Impact Internships' are internships available exclusively to all final year students, as well as recent graduates from the University of Birmingham.

An Impact Internship is your chance to:

  • Experience the excitement of working in a start-up, small to medium sized enterprise (SME), or social enterprise
  • Develop a wide range of skills whilst getting paid
  • Make a huge impact within an organisation
  • Apply knowledge from your studies to an innovative smaller business

Overview of Impact Internships

The University of Birmingham is working with start-ups based in a number of innovation, research and creative hubs to create internship opportunities for students. This internship programme provides students with the opportunity to help shape and deliver the strategic plans of some of the most innovative start-ups across the Midlands.  These businesses will have less than 250 employees.

The Impact Internships scheme is open to:

  • all current final year undergraduate students;
  • all current final year postgraduate students (both taught and research students);
  • recent University of Birmingham graduates from the last 2 years.

If you are applying to other internship programmes offered by Careers Network (Virtual Internships Programme, Experience Arts Programme and the Knowledge Exchange Programme), you would only be able to accept one opportunity in each academic year. If you accept more than one internship in the current academic year from any of these programmes, then only the first one will proceed and any subsequent offers will be withdrawn and funding not provided.

Accepting any internships or work experience outside of the programmes offered by Careers Network will not affect your eligibility for these schemes.

COVID-19 - Important information

We are maintaining close contact with the organisations we are working with and we have requested that remote projects are set up where possible, as a contingency plan if restrictions are still in place during the summer vacation.

This is currently an evolving and unpredictable situation and if anything changes we will communicate this out to applicants and ensure students are made aware.

Summer 2021 internships - Now closed

The Impact Internships are now closed for applications and candidates will be contacted by employers directly by Friday 30 April 2021. Please note that if you have applied for more than one role, you will only be able to accept one opportunity.

List of opportunities for summer 2021

Internships will last 20 working days and can be worked part-time or full-time, dependent on the business needs and the successful candidate's availability.

The successful intern will receive a £1,000 bursary for the opportunity, which will be paid directly from the University.  Please note that you do not need to apply to the work experience bursaries for these particular opportunities.
