Impact Internships

'Impact Internships' are internships available exclusively to final year students, as well as recent graduates from the University of Birmingham.

An Impact Internship is your chance to:

  • Experience the excitement of working in a start-up, small to medium sized enterprise (SME), or social enterprise
  • Develop a wide range of skills whilst getting paid
  • Make a huge impact within an organisation
  • Apply knowledge from your studies to an innovative smaller business

Overview of Impact Internships

The University of Birmingham is working with organisations based in a number of innovation, research and creative hubs to create internship opportunities for students. This internship programme provides students with the opportunity to help shape and deliver the strategic plans of some of the most innovative start-ups, social enterprises and SMEs across the Midlands.  These businesses will have less than 250 employees.

The Impact Internships scheme is open to:

  • all current final year undergraduate students;
  • all current final year postgraduate students (both taught and research students);
  • recent University of Birmingham graduates from the last 2 years.

Please note that 'final year' students are those students due to graduate in either July 2022 or December 2022.

Summer 2022 internships

Internships will last 20 working days and can be worked part-time or full-time, dependent on the business needs and the successful candidate's availability.

The successful intern will receive a £1,000 tax-free bursary for the opportunity, which will be paid directly from the University.  Please note that you do not need to apply to the work experience bursaries for these particular opportunities.

Internship opportunities will be available to apply in February 2022 and taking place over the summer vacation.

Covid-19 - Important Information

While there are currently no restrictions in the UK, we are unable to predict how the situation will evolve over the next few months. We are working on the premise that there will be no restrictions over the summer of 2022 so that our interns can experience a physical work setting if they are able to do so. We are maintaining close contact with the organisations we are working with and we have requested that remote projects are set up where possible, as a contingency plan should restrictions be imposed at short notice or should a successful candidate not be able to travel to the employer's location.

If you want to receive an alert for when these opportunities become available, register your interest below.

“The most valuable thing about the internship was the opportunity to really immerse and test out a potential career path which I had not had the chance to experience before. [...] This experience will be massively helpful for my future plans as it has developed my skills, allowed me to explore an industry I am passionate about and gain fantastic contacts and network.”
