Overview of Impact Internships

The University of Birmingham is working with organisations based in a number of innovation, research and creative hubs to create internship opportunities for students. This internship programme provides students with the opportunity to help shape and deliver the strategic plans of some of the most innovative start-ups, social enterprises and SMEs across the Midlands.  These businesses will have less than 250 employees.

The Impact Internships scheme is open to:

  • all current final year* undergraduate students;
  • all current final year* postgraduate students (both taught and research students);
  • recent University of Birmingham graduates from the last 2 years

*Please note that 'final year' students are those students due to graduate in either July 2022 or December 2022.

Students will receive a tax-free bursary of £1,000 for a 20 working day internship, paid directly by the university to the successful applicants upon accepting an internship role through the programme. No additional application process to any separate bursary schemes is required for receiving this bursary, students will automatically be entitled to this for undertaking the internship.

You can apply to as many internships as you would like, however, you will only be able accept one opportunity through this programme in this academic year.

Covid-19 and Remote Working

We are maintaining close contact with the organisations we are working with and we have requested flexibility with remote working in the event that restrictions are in place over the summer of 2022.

Applicants are asked to keep in mind that some organisations may now have a preference for remote working and some may require interns to attend their working spaces due to the nature of the internship projects. Please check each individual role for clarification on working requirements. Unless specified within the job description, applicants may expect there to be some flexibility with working in the office, remotely or a combination to suit both the employer and the successful candidate. Please note these details will need to be discussed and agreed at the interview stage.
