Annual Reviews

Annual Reviews has a "Subscribe to Open (S2O)" subscription agreement with the University of Birmingham. Under this agreement, if enough institutions subscribe, new volumes are published open access under a Creative Commons licence. If support is insufficient, the paywall is retained. This agreement covers all Annual Reviews hybrid journal titles.

Eligibility criteria

This agreement covers all authors, however as it is not guaranteed that papers will be immediately made open access by the publisher, authors are expected to self-archive the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) to Pure immediately on acceptance.

UKRI funded authors

If you are UKRI funded and looking to publish with these titles (and other titles by this publisher not listed above) you must also self-archive your AAM in Pure under a CC BY licence to ensure compliance. This is permitted by Annual Reviews as part of this agreement.

  • Authors should include the following text:
    • ‘For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence (where permitted by UKRI, ‘Open Government Licence’ or ‘Creative Commons Attribution No-derivatives (CC BY-ND) licence may be stated instead) to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising…’
  • Add grant details into the ‘disclosure statement’ field for submissions to all Annual Reviews titles. (NB This is because the publisher does not have a funder acknowledgement field.) This should also be included in any cover letter/note accompanying the submission.
  • The publisher will provide the AAM to the author prior to the ‘Review in Advance’ being made available online. Authors should ask the publisher to confirm when this version will be made available should this not be clear.
  • The author may apply the CC BY licence to the AAM.
  • The author may deposit the AAM in Pure with no embargo.
  • All queries about this process should be sent to: jjongsma@annualreviews.org

Other funded authors

If you are acknowledging other funding, before submission to the journal contact the Open Access team for further guidance.
