If you are a current student at the University of Birmingham and you need to extend your Tier 4 student visa, you will need to apply for a CAS number.
Before you can be issued with a CAS, you must attend a document checking session. Staff from the International Students' Advisory Service (ISAS) will need to check that you have the necessary documents to submit a Tier 4 application before they approve your CAS request. Students may attend a Document Checking Session up to 90 days before their current visa expires. It is University Policy that students will not be assigned a CAS if they do not have all documents checked and approved at least 10 days before their current visa expires.
Step 1 - Download an application form
You will need to download a ‘Student Request for a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies in Support of a Tier 4 Student Visa Application’ through the links below.
If you cannot open the links above, please submit an online enquiry to arrange an alternative way of getting an application form.
Step 2 - Complete your form
You will need to complete sections A, B and C of the application which includes information regarding course details, contact details and details of your passport and current visa.
Please ensure that you complete all fields in sections A, B and C.
Step 3 - School or Department approval of your form
Once you have completed sections A, B and C you will need to take the form to your School or Department to be approved by a member of staff.
For students on taught programmes this should be someone such as your programme administrator or another member of staff.
For students on research programmes the form must be approved by your academic supervisor.
Step 4 - Attend an ISAS document checking workshop
Please bring your completed CAS form, along with your visa application documents, to a document checking workshop. You can find details of the workshops on the ISAS website.
Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS)
If your programme of study requires you to have ATAS clearance, please be aware that we need to have a copy of the ATAS clearance electronic certificate you have received from the Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) prior to us being able to issue you with your CAS.
What happens next?
Once your CAS request has been approved by ISAS, we will send a CAS Statement to your personal email address within 10 working days. The CAS Statement will include a CAS number which you will need to use as part of your student visa extension application.
The CAS statement will also include personal and academic details which have been shared with the Home Office (UKVI). It is your responsibility to check the details on the CAS are correct before making your visa application. You must notify us immediately if any of the details are incorrect on the CAS statement.
