Declaration of Suitability for Social Work

Satisfactory completion of a Social Work degree at the University of Birmingham (UoB) will enable you to apply to register with Social Work England and then if registered, to practise as a social worker.

It is very important however to understand that neither acceptance onto the Social Work programme at the University of Birmingham nor satisfactory completion of the degree is in itself is a guarantee that you will be registered with Social Work England. This is the decision of Social Work England alone, based on your circumstances, including your health and any criminal record. UoB needs to be satisfied that as well as practising as a registered social worker, you will be able to undertake your training safely and effectively and, working with its placement partners, needs to ensure the safety of the public with whom you may come into contact during your training.

The University also needs information on any disability or significant health condition to be able to assess any support or reasonable adjustments that should be put in place for you and to assist you in managing your disability or condition appropriately. It is for this reason that we ask applicants to complete and return this form to us. Together with other relevant information we may obtain, completion of this form will help us to make a well-informed judgement about suitability to enter social work training.

Please note that the University of Birmingham does not automatically exclude students who have a criminal or disciplinary record, have previously experienced poor health, or have had contact with courts or social service departments. Indeed, it is recognized that the programme benefits from admitting applicants from wide and diverse backgrounds and consequently each case will be assessed individually. You will be informed if your declaration is thought to require further consideration (e.g. if you answer 'Yes' to any of the questions') and if you need to provide additional information. We may need to consult with former colleges, employers or our placement providers in considering the information, and in the event that this results in your offer being withdrawn, you will be informed of the general reason for doing so, subject to any restrictions on passing on confidential information contained within the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Please note, if you refuse to provide additional relevant information or otherwise assist in this process, the offer of a place on the programme may be withdrawn. In addition, failure to disclose relevant information, which is subsequently discovered, could lead to a suitability investigation and your exclusion from training.
